Antonio Canova is widely considered one of the great Neoclassical artists and sculptors. Indeed, some of his works are world famous and have been reproduced and celebrated many times over. Such works include his seminal Three Graces statues produced initially for the French Empress Josephine (wife of Napoleon Bonaparte) and then again for the 6th Duke of Bedford.
200 years after the death of Canova, this official Italian commemorative coin features his work Venus Italica on one side and, on the other, a bust of Canova himself. Minted from sterling silver, only 5,000 of this special issue were produced, with few making it out of Italy.
