The current, Third Hellenic Republic began in 1974 after the fall of the colonels’ junta that ruled from 1967. After much infighting, a coup d'état in Cyprus, an invasion of Cyprus by Türkiye, democracy in Greece was restored again with the swearing in of returning Prime Minister, Konstantinos Karamanlis in November of 1974. One month later, a referendum then rejected the monarchy and the Third Hellenic Republic officially began.
