Commissioned by Governor Macquarie, and created by forger William Henshall, the Holey Dollar & Dump are considered Australia's first local coins! In 1813, in an attempt to boost the colony and create a currency that would not sail away on merchant ships, Henshall punched the centre (the Dump) out of a Spanish silver dollar, creating two new coins!
This modern collector coin celebrate that original piece with a unique twist. This Royal Australian Mint dollar, is minted from Cupro-Nickel and is 30mm in diameter! Already most unusual in the canon of RAM Coins, it steps even further into the abyss by featuring a hole at its centre, just like the original Holey Dollar! YES!!!!
