Whether you like it spread thinly on white bread with a bit of butter, slathered liberally on an avocado and egg toastie (try it!), or anywhere in between, there's no doubt that Vegemite is an Australian icon. This "thick, dark brown, Australian food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract" (Thanks Wikipedia!) was first made in 1923 in Melbourne and has gone on to be the most popular spread in the country.
