One of the original fossil hunters, Mary Anning wandered the coastline near her home in Dorset, England during the early 19th century, uncovering a remarkable array of prehistoric marine life. Though she was not so recognised in her day, her discoveries changed the face of prehistoric marine research.
The first in a series of three coins honouring this great British Scientist, this official UK 50p features the dolphin-shaped Temodontosaurus. Though it appears roughly dolphin shaped, the Temnodontosaurus was actually a reptile and a big one, at that! Sizes have been estimated at between 9m and 12m in length - that's as long as a bus!
Created in conjunction with the British Natural History Museum in London, each Temnodontosaurus 50p is struck from sterling silver and features a full colour depiction of this ancient 'fishy reptile". Each coin in the limited mintage of 7,000 is housed in a perspex display case with certificate and colourful outer box.!
