Built in the coastal Scottish city of Dundee in 1901, RRS Discovery was the first purpose-built scientific research vessel and the last traditional wooden ship of its kind in the United Kingdom. Its ground-breaking voyages significantly impacted the field of scientific research and revolutionised the world’s understanding of Antarctica in the early twentieth century.
In celebration of this important vessel, The Royal Mint has produced a classic £2 commemorative, collectable coin. Minted from sterling silver, with gold-plating on the outer ring, no more than 1500 of this special commemorative coin will be issued individually.
