French author Jules Verne created a world of science fiction that, a century later, began to appear eerily prescient. Not only that but Verne's tales rank as some of the greatest adventure stories of all time. His overarching series of books, Les voyages Extraordinaires, feature classic, household name titles. Titles such as the subject of this official French collector coin, From the Earth to the Moon.

The tale of the Baltimore Gun Club and their post-Civil War attempt to build a huge "Space Gun" to launch a projectile bearing three members in to space, From the Earth to the Moon was an intriguing precursor to Man's eventual real life moon landing more than a century later.
