Capturing imaginations (nearly) as vividly as dinosaurs, those creatures from the Ice Age remain fascinations for many of us, even as we grow (physically, at least) into adulthood. The Royal Mint clearly knows this and so, the follow up to their recent Dinosauria collection, is Ice Age Giants!
The third coin in the series features the Giant Deer!! Giant deer were huge, with a standing shoulder height of just under 2 metres – the height of an average doorframe. Their distinguishing feature was their huge antlers, which were the largest of any known species, alive or extinct, and their span measured between 2.5 and 3.5 metres
Created in conjunction with the British Natural History Museum in London, each sterling silver Giant Deer 50p features the latest understanding of how this woolly beast appeared, along with a depiction of the fossilised skeleton of this great prehistoric beast.
