A huge year in Greece, 2004 marked not only the return of the Summer Olympiad to Athens, but also the national football team unexpectedly took out the UEFA European Football Championship!
Hosted in Portugal in June and July of '04, Greece began with a bang, beating the host team nation in the first round. From there, they went on a spree, taking out tournament favourites nearly every game. Ultimately, the team again played Portugal in the final, won 1-0 and kicked off a special summer of sport for the country of Greece.
Depicting the UEFA trophy and Greek flag on one side, and the statue Kroisos Kouros (dated c. 540–515 BC.) on the other, this official Greek silver coin celebrates the 20th anniversary of the win, and is limited to just 2,000 released.
