225 years ago, in the fledgling New South Wales colony, Governor Gidley King faced a constant shortage of tradeable currency - everything they had was leaving on ships with international traders! What to do??? Well, Governor King made a proclamation that, the most common coins existing in the colony would be worth MORE in NSW than they were outside!
One of those coins, thought to be the origin of the dollar sign ($), is the Spanish Pillar dollar. This historic Proclamation coin appears on this Perth Mint issue almost exactly as it was in 1800, except for one difference - it appears on an official Australian collector coin!
Limited to just 5,000 ever to be issued, each legal tender, precious metal, collectable coin is also housed in a case, with full colour outer box, and numbered certificate.
