First seen during the reign of the hedonistic Tudor King, Henry VIII, the crown was originally minted from gold and known, initially, as the ‘crown of the rose’. Over the next 500 years, the crown endured adapting to the times to be minted in silver and featuring some of the most sought-after coins in history, William Wyon’s gorgeous 1847 Gothic Crown a particularly notable issue.
Though no longer circulating, likely due to its size, the modern crown has retained its primary function as a commemorative piece, annually covering all sorts of celebrations.
