An ancient, far-flung Greek civilisation, Bactria traces its history back to before Alexander the Great's conquest of most of the then-known world. Situated some way East of the centre of Ancient Greece, Bactria sits near the Himalayas and surprisingly close to China. In fact, one of the more interesting cities of the Bactrian region was Ai Khanum, located in what is now Afghanistan!
Indeed, in that city some of the greatest archaeological artefacts of this ancient time have been found, including a silver disk depicting the goddess Cybele accompanied by the winged victory goddess Nike on a chariot driven by lions, and the Greek solar god Helios overlooking them. It is this spectacular disk that is recreated here, on this incredible three ounce, 99.9% silver coin.
