The Fontaine Saint-Michel was completed in 1860 during the restructuring of the city of Paris and is the tallest fountain in the city. Located close to the Siene River, it was designed by Gabriel Davioud and the bronze statue was sculpted by Francisque Joseph Duret. 'The fountain is dedicated to the Archangel Michael.
The main figure of Saint Michael is displayed combating and defeating Satan. Michael is one of the 3 archangels, repeatedly depicted as the great captain of angels, the leader of the heavenly hosts, and the warrior helping the children of Israel. He is known as the Patron Saint of Warriors. It was Michael who appeared to Daniel, who chased Satan away from paradise, who helped David beat Goliath, and who appeared to Joan of Arc to free the country of France.
