Along with Una & the Lion, William Wyon's 19th century coin design, the Three Graces, is considered among the most beautiful numismatic sculpts ever. The Three Graces design is inspired by the three goddesses of virtue that appeared in ancient Greek mythology. Inspired as Wyon's design was, it never actually made it to circulation - the coin was produced by Wyon as part of a Mint competition to design the new issues under The Great Recoinage of 1816!
Issued here, as the first in a new East India Company series entitled "The Masterpiece Collection", the original Three Graces design is reproduced using modern technology and, as one might expect, looks glorious. As beautiful as the three goddesses are, they look even better when struck to current-day proof specifications.
