365 million years ago, as fish came onto land, there was some funny looking creatures around, including the long since extinct amphibian on this official Latvian collector coin! Ventastega Curonica was a four-limbed fish-like creature whose fossils have only been found in Latvia. Its discovery has been highly important to the vertebrate evolution.
Fossils are a remarkable theme for collector coins, and its no different here. The Latvian Central Bank has included a Ventestaga fossil set against its rocky bed and in minted relief, it looks perfect. Better yet, overlaid on top, photo-luminescent print that, when held to the light for 40 seconds, will glow in the dark! Brilliant!
