First issued a full two years before the United Kingdom moved to a decimal coinage, the original 50p coin emerged in 1969 to replace the 10 Shilling banknote. Unique at the time, the new 50p’s seven sided shape allowed it to roll smoothly in vending machines.
In 2019, The Royal Mint honours the 50thAnniversary of the 50p with this special BU set, featuring five of the most important 50p designs of the past five decades.
Within this set, the Mint has brought together the original seated Britannia, Roger Bannister’s first sub-four-minute mile, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Guides, and one of Britain’s most sought-after coins – the Kew Gardens 50p. Each of these historic coins is struck with a 2019 date, making this set very special for all collectors.
