On September 20th, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan and his crew set off on a journey that would prove both historic and tragic. Initially intending to connect a Western trade route between Spain and the East Indies, Magellan’s fleet completed that journey before continuing onwards and around the globe. Demonstrating that the Earth was indeed round and not flat, Magellan’s crew returned to Spain in 1522. Sadly, Magellan was killed by natives in the Phillippines and never saw an end to the massive endeavour that he had undertaken.
