The Gold Sovereign, first struck in its modern format in 1817, was the most important coin in the world for more than 100 years. Used as a trade coin, it was in the early 1850’s that the sovereign spread from its home base in Britain to the Colonies in Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa – but, amazingly, never to New Zealand, until now.
Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, the first British Sovereign to reign over New Zealand, the 2019 Gold Proof Sovereign is the very first of its type! In more than 200 years of the gold sovereign, this is the first New Zealand Gold Sovereign ever struck!
Minted following traditional sovereign specifications, only a maximum of 1819 of this gold coin were struck.
