A devastating side effect of the Second World War, it was several years after the guns fell silent that the Soviet-led East Germany constructed the Berlin Wall, effectively separating east and west Berlin, in 1961. Just over 28 years later, in 1989, rebels in East Germany were the catalyst to the wall finally coming down. For the 30th anniversary of this life-changing event, the Monnaie De Paris has created this wonderful tribute. Struck from 22.2 grams of 90% pure silver, each 10€ coin is an optical illusion! When viewed straight on, the coin appears as an upright, standing piece of the Berlin Wall. A closer look, however, proves that the coin is flat and ‘L’ shaped! This masterpiece of modern minting is limited to a mintage of just 3,000 coins worldwide.
