The 2018 Royal Cypher Guinea
Minted in the exact same specification as the last circulating Spade Guinea struck under King George III, the 2018 Royal Cypher Guinea Gold Proof coin features a single motif taken from the embroidered emblem ERII Royal Cypher which featured on Her Majesty’s Robe of Estate worn at her Coronation ceremony on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey.
The 2018 Royal Arms Guinea
Featuring the official coat of arms of the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, known as the ‘Royal Arms’, it comprises of a shield depicting the three lions passant guardant of England in the first and fourth quarters; the lion rampant of Scotland in the second; and a harp for Ireland in the third. The shield is surrounded by a garter, with lion and unicorn supporters. A smaller version of the coronation royal cypher ‘ERII’ taken from Her Majesty’s Robe of Estate appears above.
The 2018 Coronation Guinea
With a design inspired by the commemorative crowns issued in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation, it features four shields bearing the individual arms of the United Kingdom, separated by the jewelled Sword of Offering and the Sovereign’s Sceptre, both objects of the Crown Jewels that play a role in the coronation ceremony. As with the Royal Arms and Royal Cypher Guinea, a version of the coronation royal cypher ‘ERII’ from Her Majesty’s Robe of Estate appears in the centre.
This special issue of three gold proof Guineas is a celebration of a unique moment in royal history and the first to be issued featuring royal emblems directly related to Her Majesty. Inspired by the tradition of using heraldic symbols and intricate designs to create strong royal motifs, the designs draw inspiration from symbols relating directly to the coronation ceremony to create the world’s first collection of Queen Elizabeth II Guineas.
