Contrary to the murky origins of many of the convicts transported to Australia between 1788 and 1868, many of those criminals actually helped to shape our nation to be what it is today. Whilst its true, some of the convicts continued their illegal ways - some became bushrangers, for instance - there were many more that shaped the country in a positive fashion. Australia's first ever coins, the holey dollar and dump, were created by a convict, for example.
This Royal Australian Mint silver coin celebrates the convict origins of Australia with a design in the shape of a tree growing up and outwards from the roots of convict past. Struck to the Mint's outstanding Proof quality, each 11 gram silver coin is housed in a presentation case with certificate outlining the limited mintage of 5,000 pieces.
