Born in 1897, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith is a well known luminary of aviation, here in Australia. Setting the record for the England-Australia flight in 1927, Kingsford Smith was also the first to fly across the Pacific Ocean in 1928!
In 1997, the Royal Australian Mint honoured the man whose name is also synonymous with Sydney Airport, by featuring him in the 1997 Annual Coin Set. Inside the set, the five regular circulating coin designs, plus a one-year-only $1 coin bearing Kingsford Smith's portrait, as well as his famous plane, the Southern Cross.
